Know Your Credit Score Before You Apply
CheckMyFile is the only UK service that shows your credit report data from all three major agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — in one place. Essential reading before any mortgage or finance application.

Unlike free single-agency tools, CheckMyFile pulls your credit data from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion simultaneously. Lenders each use different agencies — so a clean report on one does not guarantee a clean report on another. Knowing all three before you apply gives you the full picture lenders will see.
For anyone considering a mortgage, bridging loan, development facility, or commercial finance, this is the first step — not an afterthought.
FCA-authorised. CheckMyFile is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Your data is handled securely and never affects your credit score.
Soft search only. Checking your own report is a soft search and has zero impact on your credit score — unlike a lender's hard search at application stage.
Errors are common. Around 1 in 5 credit reports contain inaccuracies. Catching and correcting these before you apply can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection.
Why It Matters for Finance Applications
- See exactly what lenders see — across all three agencies in a single report.
- Identify CCJs, defaults, or missed payments that may trigger a decline before you apply.
- Spot address discrepancies and electoral roll issues that silently lower your score.
- Understand your credit utilisation ratio and how to improve it ahead of an application.
- Track score changes monthly so you can time your application for peak creditworthiness.
- Dispute any errors directly with the agencies using CheckMyFile's guided process.
10 Tips to Strengthen Your Credit File
Actionable steps to improve your credit profile before a mortgage or finance application. Most take under 30 minutes to action.
Register on the electoral roll
Lenders use electoral roll data to verify your identity and address. Not being registered is one of the most common and easily fixable reasons for a declined application. Register at gov.uk — it takes five minutes.
Keep credit utilisation below 30%
If you have a £10,000 credit limit, keeping your balance below £3,000 signals healthy usage. Paying cards down before your statement date — not just the due date — ensures the lower balance is reported to the agencies.
Check all three agencies, not just one
Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion hold different data. A lender might use any of them. An error on one agency you have not checked could be causing silent damage. CheckMyFile is the only service that shows all three together.
Correct errors before you apply
Incorrect address history, accounts you didn't open, or missed payments that were actually made — all can sit on your file for years unless challenged. Dispute errors directly with the agency. Resolution typically takes 28 days.
Pay every bill by direct debit
A single missed payment can stay on your file for six years. Set every recurring commitment — utilities, phone, credit card minimums — to direct debit. Payment history is the single largest factor in any credit score.
Avoid multiple applications in a short window
Every hard search leaves a footprint. Multiple applications within 90 days signal financial stress to lenders. Use an eligibility checker or broker to shortlist lenders before any formal application is made.
Close unused credit accounts carefully
Dormant accounts with zero utilisation can actually help your total available credit ratio. But old accounts with negative history — missed payments, overlimit markers — are better closed once the adverse marker has aged past three years.
Delink from financially associated people
If you have a joint account or mortgage with someone whose credit is poor, their history can affect yours. Once the financial relationship ends, you can request a notice of disassociation from each credit reference agency.
Settle CCJs and defaults where possible
County Court Judgements and defaults remain on file for six years. Settling does not remove the entry, but a 'satisfied' status is viewed significantly more favourably than an outstanding one — especially for mortgage lenders.
Build history if you have little credit
No credit history can be as problematic as bad credit. A low-limit credit card used for small recurring purchases and repaid in full each month — petrol, a subscription — builds a visible track record within six to twelve months.
